本作は、作家自身が執筆した短編小説を出発点とし、「名前を持たない存在だけが住む谷」を舞台に展開されるインスタレーションです。この架空の谷では、本、食品、日用品といったすべての物から「名前」が剥ぎ取られています。新聞の見出しやロゴ、ラベル、書籍のタイトルは塗りつぶされ、来訪者は“名前のない世界”に身を置くことになります。 　

空間内では、名前を持たない人々が、名前のない物に名付けを行う様子が映像として映し出されます。導入としての書籍には、名前の変更を経験した人々の架空の記録が記録されています。 　

名づけは、単なる分類の行為ではありません。それはしばしば、制度、慣習、家族、国家といった力の構造に深く関わっています。「名は体を表す」と言われるとき、私たちは自らの身体、人生を、名という器に収め直しているのかもしれません。

 

名づけという行為そのものを批評的に問い直すと同時に、「名前を持たなかった／選べなかった」人々の現実と想像力に耳を澄ます場でもあります。名前とは誰のものか。その名は本当に自ら選んだものなのか。私たちはその名を、いかなる構造のなかで背負っているのか。本作は、そうした問いに向き合うためのひとつの試みです。

This work is an installation based on a short story written by the artist, set in a fictional valley inhabited only by beings without names. In this imagined space, all objects—books, food, and everyday items—have been stripped of their names. Newspaper headlines, logos, labels, and book titles are obscured, placing visitors within a “world without names.”

Within the space, video works depict nameless people assigning names to nameless objects. As an introduction, a book presents fictional records of individuals who have experienced changes to their names.

Naming is not merely an act of classification. It is often deeply connected to structures of power such as institutions, customs, family, and the state. When it is said that “a name represents the body,” it may be that we are fitting our bodies and lives into the frame of a name.

At once a critical inquiry into the act of naming itself, this work also creates a space to listen to the realities and imaginations of those who have not had—or have not been able to choose—their names. To whom does a name belong? Is it truly something we have chosen? Within what structures do we carry it? This work is an attempt to engage with these questions.
