MONO.LOGUES is pleased to present "Cutting/Pasting Spinning Feathers," a solo exhibition by Ryoko Furukawa from June 10 (Fri.) to June 27 (Mon.).

In order to create something new, I want to get away from myself," says Furukawa in the context of this exhibition. Self" is, in other words, a kind of habit. Unintentionally, the knowledge we have and the actions we take have some kind of bias, and that is how we design our lives, but on the other hand (and in a disgusting way), it is also full of prejudice and bias. It can be interpreted in this way: the ideas and actions that emerge from "I" are in essence nothing more than compositions of "I." Furukawa's work this time is a reflection of such a self.
This time, Furukawa asked himself whether new paintings could be found beyond the limitation of "I" and employed a literary technique called "cut-up," in which a particular text is decomposed and recomposed into a different text. He chopped up words that had nothing to do with him and had no connection to him, in other words, outside of "I", and linked them together, setting the resulting words as titles.
Furukawa has always used a method called "staining," which is difficult to control in terms of time. The method she has adopted for this exhibition is also an uncontrollable one, but she dares to create an unstable situation that disturbs and weakens the artist's command, and to stand there while she creates her paintings. It is an experiment in "creating something new" at the same time.
However, whether Furukawa's "I" in her works will disappear completely is another story. There are many aspects of a painting in which Furukawa is judged by herself, such as the choice of words, the adjustment of colors, and the way she draws lines. As Furukawa says in a nuanced way that she is "moving away from herself," rather than "erasing herself," her approach this time may be partly aimed at taking a bird's-eye view of the causal, destiny-like, or curse-like link between the artist and the painting, which is neither "=" nor "≠" in the sense of the word. It may be that one of the aims of this project is to look down on the causal, fateful, or cursed connection. How to design a sense of distance between "I" and the work, which neither can leave nor want to unite, and how to unearth a picture that is born from "I" but unknown to "I" or rather sparkling darkly in a place unknown to anyone? We will be able to catch a glimpse of the artist tackling these questions at the exhibition.

「新しいものを生み出すために、自分というものから遠ざかってみたい」と、今回の展示にあたって古川はそう話しています。「自分」とは、言い換えるならば、一つの癖のようなもの。思わず知らず、私たちが持っている知識、とっている行動には何かしら偏りがあるもので、むしろそうやって私たちは生をデザインするわけですが、しかし裏を返せば(そして嫌な言い方をすれば)偏見と偏向に満ちているともいえます。「私」から生まれる発想も行為も、しょせんは「私」から組成されるものに過ぎないと、そんな風にも解釈できます。
今回の古川は、そうした自分というリミテーションを離れた先にこそ新しい絵画があるのではないかという問いを立て、カットアップと呼ばれる、ある特定のテキストを分解し、別のテキストに再構築する文学技法を採用しました。自分とは関係もなく脈絡もない、つまり「私」の外にある言葉を刻み、つなげ、そうして生まれた言葉をタイトルとして設定し、そこを出発点としてモチーフや構図を選び、絵画をつくっていきます。
もともと、古川はステイニングというタイムコントロールの効きにくい手法をとってきました。今回取り入れた手法も同じくアンコントローラブルなものですが、このように作者の指揮権を乱し、弱めるような不安定な状況をあえて生み出し、そこに佇みながら絵画制作にのぞむことが、つまり彼女なりの「自分から遠ざかること」の実践であり、同時に「新しいものを生み出すこと」の実験なのでしょう。
とはいえ、それでも作品に注がれる古川の「私」が完全消滅するかといえば、それはまた別の話。言葉のチョイス、色彩の調整、線の引き方など、一つの絵画において彼女自身のジャッジが下される局面は多々あります。古川も「自分を消す」ではなく「自分から遠ざかる」というニュアンスで話すように、今回の取り組みは、言うなれば画家と絵画という「＝」でもないし「≠」でもない、因果のような運命のような、あるいは呪いのような結びつきを、少し俯瞰して眺めることに狙いの一端があるのかもしれません。離れ去ることもできない、かといって一体化もしたくない、「私」と作品の間にある距離感をどうデザインするか、またどのようにして「私」から生まれながらも「私」も知らない、むしろ誰も知らないところで暗くきらめいている絵を掘り起こすか。その問いに取り組む画家の様子が、会場で垣間見えることでしょう。
